To clarify, in the end-of-year exam, would SUVAT not be considered as appropriate working for method marks?

You can use SUVAT if you'd like - VCAA openly states that they will accept any method if it is mathematically correct.

Yes KM is right, I should have said "you are expected to be able to solve constant acceleration problems using calculus". Sorry for the error.
