This is more of a Software Development topic though you're still expected to know them in ITA.
Transaction processing systems (TPS) keep track of all data concerning the transactions of an organisation (e.g. number of sales, stock quantities etc.)
It is the most fundamental system of an organisation.
Examples of TPS include online ordering systems, banking systems or systems that control stock in a warehouse.
Office automation systems (OA) perform routine tasks usually undertaken in an office environment.
Routine tasks include word processing, making calculations (spreadsheets), printing documents and communicating with other departments.
Common applications encountered in OA include word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software and e-mail.
Management information systems (MIS) are used in all organisations to help with managerial tasks.
Produces various types of reports to assist with managerial decisions.
Can work in conjunction with TPS to create reports or with DSS to implement decisions that have been approved.
Decision support systems (DSS) are used to help users make decisions by creating "what-if" scenarios.
Helps managers make non-routine decisions.
Decision models are designed within the DSS, which are numerical representations of a situation.
Expert systems are very knowledgeable in specific areas this knowledge is then used to produce or recommend a decision.
Includes a knowledge base which contains the captured knowledge of human experts.
Situations where expert systems are used include prescribing medicines, locating minerals, analysing stock-market information and diagnosing diseases.
