How is Collin Li?
vcesuccess:
i am looking for a tutor. did you have collin li for subjects? is he good?
Collin Li:
Hi,
I don't think any of my students from this year used VCENotes. The only one I know who used it has probably stopped logging on since VCE has finished. This is mainly because nowadays, nearly all of my students come from word of mouth recommendations from previous students (I don't know why I bother to update my VCENotes advertisement)
From 2008, I tutored a lot of VCENotes people:
* I've tutored polky, who is the user on VCENotes with the pink stars, because she duxed VCEotes last year.
* At least 2 other VCENotes members who don't post very much (especially now), but ended up doing exceptionally well in Chemistry (50 raw).
Academically, I don't think I offered them much that they already didn't know (because they were top students), but in hindsight, I noticed I coached them quite well. I got them to play the right mindset in an exam -- the one that unlocks the best potential. I didn't notice that was my value-add at the time, I was learning too.
This year, in 2009, I was able to work with students that weren't already academically exceptional, and I felt that motivation and confidence were still greater inputs to the success of my students than what technical academic knowledge I could teach them. I feel like my technical academic knowledge is like a pre-requisite to my ability to tutor well, but what makes me successful is my experience with mentoring. (I openly admit that 'experience' means having made mistakes, but also learning from them)
I'm learning more about teaching and learning all the time, and I've written a bit of my story and journey on my blog here: http://collinli.com/2009/11/08/becoming-a-successful-tutor/
Hope that lets you learn more about me, and my interest in seeing my students succeed!
Cheers.

Are you in contact with flusher aka David Shen? He's also an educational entrepreneur and helps people psychologically (styles himself as a 'peak-performance coach'.)

Are you asking me? Nope. I didn't reply to an opportunity he sent me once, because he didn't market himself to be very trustworthy (even if he is).
I admit at the time I was a bit closed-minded though. I should have just asked for more information.
