Is ANU a good university? Mainly hear about Monash, Melbourne and sometimes La Trobe..

Probably the reason why you don't hear about it is because it's in Canberra.  :D  But yes, like kendra explained, it's the best uni in Australia because The Times has ranked it in 17th in the world compared to 36th for UoM and 45th for Monash.

For more details, see here.

ANU is the best uni in Australia! Humph's PhB in pure maths required a 99.

ANU is the best university for post graduates (not undergraduates... I think) in Australia. It's gets a lot of credit for all its research. And when a professor in some field comes on to the tv to talk about something, they're often from ANU :P
But I wouldn't say it's the best in everything it does.
I think when choosing a uni, you have to weigh up lots of things - location, size of uni, prestige of uni, enter (obviously), etc.

It's really weird, I too do not hear about ANU, but I know it is the number 1 Uni in Australia, nah but I prefer Monash/Melbourne ><

I guess we dont hear about it, because it doesnt need the attention, the rankings that are published are free advertising

Also it costs a fair bit to stay in Canberra without a scholarship so many people just consider unis a bit closer to home

Saying it is the number 1 university is pointless unless you quantify what that means. The Times Ranking is not an evaluation of how good a course is for you (someone who just finished high school.)

Which course needs the highest ENTER - out of curiosity?

I think law/something at monash requires the highest ENTER. PhB at ANU requires a 99.

I think last year would've been UoM Dentistry from personal experience.

wasn't UoM's medicine higher?

There wasn't a UoM Medicine intake last year.

oh how silly of me..

Choosing a course based purely on enter is baseless and stupid. The number one requirement (assuming u have a high enough enter in the first place) is to have a general interest in the course u want to do.
Some snippets of what goes on in IRC:

Well what I'm trying to ask is like. Has anyone changed their preferences based on their under predicted ENTER? E.g. they chose courses that are 80ish ENTER and got a 95 ENTER and changed their preferences because they thought its a waste to do a lower requirement course?

Nope, most of its courses have a lower ATAR requirement than that of Melbourne or Monash. E.g. All double degrees involving Law "only" need 95, whereas it's at least 98 at Monash, and back when Melbourne offered undergrad Law it was well over 99. The various PhB programs require 99 admittedly (though you can get in with slightly lower) but then again so does the Dean's Scholar program at Monash.
Then again, ANU's entrance requirements are not set so much according to demand, they're usually fixed each year. And the demand obviously isn't as high, because it's in Canberra. You see a lot of high-achieving country kids at ANU, because in order to go to a decent uni they'll have to move regardless, and a lot of them seem to choose ANU.

Well what I'm trying to ask is like. Has anyone changed their preferences based on their under predicted ENTER? E.g. they chose courses that are 80ish ENTER and got a 95 ENTER and changed their preferences because they thought its a waste to do a lower requirement course?
Wait until results come out; I'm certain we'll see threads on here about that exact situation.

Given that a course's ENTER is based on demand, it's as retarded as buying Britney Spears simply because everyone else is buying Britney Spears.
