I'm currently working out how much I need to spend for essentials at uni....

If Im doing a maths subject, is it necessary to have a graphics calculator to do the coursework or will a scientific calculator do fine? I don't want spend $200 on a calculator I won't use a lot....

We never used calculators for UMEP, so it was rare that someone actually brought theirs in. However, they're still useful for checking your answers and such (for assignments/homework).

MUEP was different. We had open book exams and access to calculators. On the other hand though, normal monash students doing equivalent units to us had no such luxuries.
If you have one from year 12, retain it, otherwise I dont think you'll need to buy one. Ahmad is right (of course) in that they're great for checking answers, especially the CAS ones like the TI89.

I found it highly ironic that out of the four subjects I did, the only subject that did not need a calculator were the Maths faculty subjects.

most of the time you're not allowed graphics calculators in exams, so there's no real point in having one.

having a program like mathematica or maple on your computer, on the other hand, is useful for your assignments and the like and is much more effective than a calculator anyway.

Hmm ACU encourages the use of calculators lol ... but since we're going to be teachers I guess we will need to know how to use our calculators as we will be using TI-89 calculators or similar ones in the future :)
