How is First year Commerce?

Hi everyone,

I've been offered a scholarship which cannot be deferred and is a rather nice sum of money.

So I am now debating as to whether taking a Gap Year is really more important than a scholarship.

My reason for a Gap Year is mainly because I feel as though I can't do year 12 hardcore study so soon next year.

Is Uni first year - or uni life in general so intensive? Do you get no time at all to read books, relax, have free time, watch movies etc? Because I didn't get any time to read books this year, and I feel sick at just the thought of having to do that much work so soon.  Is it like year 12 all over again?

Also, if you have a life at Uni, do you reckon your grades would suffer?

Please let me know about your own experiences! =)

Thanks heaps!

I have no idea about commerce at Melb uni but my oldest brother is doing science. He managed straight H1s first year because he made smart use of his time such as studying a couple of hours a night and a few on weekends. By no means did he study to the extreme that he did nothing else because he found a nice balance of hanging out with friends at the pub, clubbing, working and studying for uni.

As you long as you prioritise your time and have a bit of balance between uni life and study you should have no probs.

Also I have heard that first year doesn't really count for much and it's only really the second and third year that it becomes important and harder.

If you decide to defer though, I am more than happy for you to give the scholarship to me :P

I found there was as much studying to do compared with VCE, but much more enjoyable. It helps doing what you like best :P

Do you know if you can take a year and then defer your scholarship in 2nd year?

If so I reckon you should accept the scholarship and take 2nd year off to do "stuff" :)

Also, was the course (Uni) you got the scholarship for your first preference?

first year commerce is not too bad. considering you only have around 12 hrs per week there should be a lot of free time at uni to study leaving weekends+weekday nites free. workload is pretty light considering. you should be fine.

I'd take the scholarship and not defer. There is plenty of time to have fun and do what you want while you study at uni, especially in commerce since you have so few hours.

I think you can defer your scholarship at Melbourne? I'm almost certain. Call the scholarships office.

That's what I thought as well.  I'm pretty sure you can defer scholarships.  If you defer the offer, I've always thought the scholarship automatically defers as well, right?
