Isn't it really hard to get into actuarial studies at UoM, where only 1-2 students can actually get in each year?

uhh, wtf? Srsly, wtf ? :P

I don't know what are on about, but the prereq to enter the "Introduction to Actuarial Studies" subject you have needed to completed Mathematics 1 or 2 (you need 40 for spec. math) or Calculus 1 (<40 spec. students, need a high uni exam mark).

But if you're referring to the dropouts of actuarial after 1st and 2nd year, then yeah, only a few students remain.

I'm referring to the very few people who become fully qualified in the actuary profession.

it's not the actual intake that's the problem; people can get through and become actuaries. however, it's just that due to the difficulty of the course, you don't end up having many fully qualified actuaries in the end.

its very important to get into the Honour year for actuarial studies at melb uni, or else you would be looking for many more years to study to get the accreditation.  and if you don't get the actuarial professional accreditation it would be just wasting 3 years at uni.

Doing an honours year allows exemption of Part II from the IAA.  It does not mean if you graduate without Honours, you will not get FIAA. You can do the Part II course at the IAA while doing a part-time job. It's exactly the same, and you can complete it one year if you so desire to.

After completing Part II, you head upto Part III which you must do at IAA which leads to the FIAA qualification.

For other aspiring actuaries, though the course is highly demanding and challenging it is equally rewarding both intellectually, socially (as you could be helping a life [health insurance], finances [banks] ) and of course financially (new grads obtain $100K with a growth of (or d(money)/d(growth) LOL)  $11,000 per annum)

Yeah, meaning you really go to have a passion for this career and not do it purely for the financial incentives.  (even though, it's statistically unheard of an actuary to get a salary of less than <$85K newly grad)

what if your passion is money? that's not necessarily a bad thing given what you will be dealing with day to day in your profession
