Why do people tend do Chinese 3/4 in Y11?

I know that was probably meant a bit flippantly, but I can honestly say I really enjoyed CSL, even though I didn't do all that well. Tellingly, though, all the guys in my CSL class (everyone was hua qiao, ABC or whatever except me) who did it because of a) parental pressure or b) scaling advantage ended up doing even worse. I think to do even mildly well in a LOTE, you either need to have been learning it for several years before VCE (at home, chinese school, primary school), but more importantly, you have to love it enough to put in the effort. Scaling is a good incentive but for me it was never a strong enough motivator.

Scaling doesn't motivate me either, it's not enough to compensate for my deficiency such that Chinese will end up top 4.

I started chinese school in grade 2 and if I didn't quit in year 9 (best decision ever, I don't regret it at all despite the scaling and 'disappointing' my family) I would've done 3/4 in year 12. Nearly all of the people in my class were actually a year below so they'll be doing 3/4 in year 11. Generally the parents try to push their kids into a higher class if possible if this is at a chinese school.

Chinese schools are pretty flexible with letting people be in a higher class and parents would want to take advantage of that. It's like picking up a 3/4 in year 11 because you can and you appear smarter because it's like ~woah you're doing advanced work.
