Why do people tend do Chinese 3/4 in Y11?

chinese was my only choice, because i was new and didn't do accelerated maths or applied for bio

otherwise i would have done biology

TrueTears:
I did SLA in year 11 because languages take up a lot of time, so I had to focus a lot on it if I wanted to do well.

Year 11 I had a lot of time, so I did it in year 11.

Oh yeah, that was one of the other reasons why I did it as well.  Definitely one of the wisest decisions I've made about my education thus far.

:o  Also, your karma is 2012 right now...

Does that mean doing chinese 3/4 in year 12... is not a good idea? also doing another 5 subjects at school.

This is definitely a wise idea, and was (anecdotally) the main reason why most of the year 11s in my class were doing 3/4 CSL or CLSA. Although I wonder: given that this reason would be applicable to all languages, why is it especially common to Chinese? Could it be a cultural attitude amongst a lot of Chinese-background students (or perhaps their parents) that makes this seem more attractive?

--- Quote ---I think it's because many people have been going to Chinese school since they were very young, and one more year really won't make a difference.

I don't mean to be bitchy, but you can take this argument a little further: there are always a few students in the CSL and CSLA streams that are not _genuine_ second language students, and so if they have already received a Chinese-language education overseas, they're going to blitz 3/4, whether its in yr 11 or yr 12. This is certainly true of the one yr 11 guy in my CSL class who got a 50 - not that I begrudge him anything.
