choosing subjects...

do u choose to undertake subjects based on what u enjoy or based on the fact that u need them for the course that u wish to study at uni? I know that i personally chose certain subjects based on the fact that i 'needed' them and not necessarily on the fact that i enjoyed them.

Well, I picked my subjects entirely based on what I enjoy and seeing as the course I want to get into needs these subjects, it's a win-win.
Generally, the course that you like is somewhat similar to the subjects that you like.
Remember, remember the 5th of November

2010 - MM CAS (47) - Cisco 1+2 (pass :P)
2011 - Eng - Phys - Chem - Spesh - Latin - UMAT
ATAR - 99.00+ plz... :)

Feel free to PM me for anything :D

LOL you have the extreme asian five. Lucky you enjoy them.

I picked subjects I like. Apart from Further. I picked that because a maths study is a prereq for many courses.

Lol, the asian five plus Latin (crazy scaling and fun!) and Cisco (super bonus!)
Best combo for me! :P

What's the actual bonus in Cisco?

It's the average of your top 4 subjects, as a 5th or 6th subject.

So say you get (scaled) eng 46, mm 49, latin 51, spec 50
That equates to 4.9 bonus, which is handy for a yr 11 seventh subject :)

I started off planning to do the Asian five (minus LOTE) in year 11, then decided to drop high scaling subjects for subjects that scale down/not as much because of interest.

Basically, pretty much no matter what your 5th or 6th subjects are (except getting 5.5/5.0 on umep/muep subjects), the bonus will be better than these as it is the average of top 4.
Then again, it's only a pass required and it is usually taken in yr 11 (or even yr 10)

To be honest if i picked subjects i actually enjoyed and wanted to do my course would be something like this: Biology, English Language, History Revolutions, IT: Applications, IT: Software Development & [Politics OR Philosophy OR Economics OR Psyc]

Instead its: Biology, Chemistry, Methods, IT: Applications, IT: Software Development & English language.

When i was doing my course selection i picked biology simply because i needed a 6th subject, to be honest year 10 biology and previous years werent really that differentiated and didnt really give me that much of a taste either. It was a happy accident because now i really like biology.

As for the other two: chemistry & methods, i purely picked them at the time because i needed them. Ive had a particular distaste for math for most of my schooling but i carried on anyway. I absolutely dread class however and my teacher is a terrible always depressed and angsty little man, this doesnt add to my enjoyment of the subject.

I chose chemistry because in early ish year 10 when we were doing our course selections because i wanted to be a chemist (not a pharmacist) i thought it was a decent job untill i found it pays 50k a year and i actually talked to a chemist. So i totally changed my aspirations after that. Lucky i have chem however because i want to get into med and itd be impossible if i didnt havec chem.

However there were a lot more equations and formulas than year 10 chem lead me to believe, so i was slightly shocked and disappointed. I didnt mind the subject i guess and my teacher is a really fantastic one, he really helped a lot with my interest and motivation in it. I wasnt a huge fan overall but if i had any other teacher i probably would of resented it as well.

I guess i wrote a whole novel here but my point is if the system actually allowed me to pick the subjects i wanted instead of the subjects i needed id be much happier and not dread class sometimes and probably do better as well.
