errr...my understanding is that its the closest thing in uni to a classroom environment

You have a tutor (like a 3rd year student) and a bunch of other people doing the unit and yea...

Tutes are more compulsory than lectures... -.-"
There's almost always a tute attendance hurdle and sometimes tute participation even makes up a percentage of your final mark.

Tutorials are designed to complement lectures. As you know in lectures, lecturers present info/theories/principles to hundreds of students. During the lecture there is usually very little opportunity to discuss or question what the lecturer says. Tutorials are less formal than lectures and are conducted in smaller groups. It provides an opportunity where students can clarify and extend, through readings, discussions and other activities, what they learn from the lectures. Tutorials give you the opportunity to ask questions about the information presented in the lectures and clarify issues related to the course. You can learn from hearing other perspectives and you can use the other students to test your ideas. This means that tutorials can save you study time and help you to
prepare for assignments and exams. Wouldn't recommend skipping out on your tutorials. And like what Fyrefly said above, most tutors mark you on attendance and basically you can fail if you don't turn up to your tutorials.

In my survival guide at uni which Monash gave me, it said that for every 1 hour of a lecture/lab, I should spend 2 hours consolidating the material. Now if attending a tute, would that mean I wouldn't require to spend as much time consolidating material as the tute itself will be a tool to consolidate the work?

No... there is a lot of work to be done outside of class... readings, tute work, assignments, exam revision... that estimate works on the assumption that you go to your classes... if you don't, you'll have to put in even more effort.

So how small are tutes and what exactly do you do? Is it just a group where you discuss freely or its actually guided learning?

A tutorial is a session that will have a tutor (usually a masters or a PhD student) go over what you did in lectures (just to make sure you guys are on the right track) and you will also get a set of questions relating to that particular area.

Some may be non-compulsory, but usually they are and I would recommend you go to them.

Guys... don't misunderstand... sometimes tutors are students themselves, but tutes are very reminiscent of high school classes.

Usually a full class has about 15 - 20 students enrolled, depending on how large the room used for the tute is and faculty policy.

Obviously, some class times that are unpopular may have only a handful of students... it will be up to the unit coordinator to decide how few is too few and whether to merge tutes together or not, but the more 'empty' classes will probably have about 10 students.

I think it depends on skill level and difficulty. And i think it only happens in subjects like IT. IT is different from most subjects because once you've say learnt databases thats it. Unis won't really build on that more. Hence why a student who has aced the subject could come back and tutor it. Whilst in say business the idea of "accounting" takes years and years to fully understand and you simply could not go out an teach it after finishing one "part" of it.
