Work and VCE

What are peoples thoughts on working a part time job while trying to achieve a very high ENTER (90+). Is it possible, considering it's already hard enough to balance studying with free time to have a release. What are your past experiences with yourself, or other people who you've known that have been in the same situation?

I'm currently in year 11 doing legal studies 3&4 and continuing English, Methods CAS, Chemistry, Biology and Italian with a possibility of doing UMEP Biology in year 12. Aiming for 94+ ENTER. Is it advisable for my situation? I'm not too sure. Thanks in advance peeps.

2 Shifts a week is easily managable and its actually a good break from the normal study routine

I personally worked Saturdays, Sundays or both and didn't find it interfering

yea i have work every Friday though during holidays i work 3-4 nights a week for money.lol
but i think that its good to get experience becuase i dont thik its good to leach of your parents.
i personally dont like students who get given everything they want when they want and do nothing for it. i like earning money gives me a sense of achievement hen i buy something.lol

Objectively speaking, it'll probably hurt you, but it's a question of the extent to which it will.

There are still people I know that leech off their parents >.>

I remember teachers and guest speakers saying that 8-12hrs a week is acceptable and anything more is a bit too much.

As it leaves you with less available time, it kinda forces you to manage the time you do have more carefully and efficiently... i think :P

Everyone needs something out of school. If that's work, great, if it's something else, that's good too.

quite often those with more free time get less efficient study done due to it being so easy to procrastinate till the last minute

Sorry if I did sound unclear... its a good thing because it teaches time management skills.

I agree with *ryan777* that if you have too much time, your studying isnt as efficient.  You're more likely to bum around then do school stuff at the end than do all your homework THEN bum around.

What about if you had other restraints such as sports or religious obligations (That take up a lot of time like mine). Has anyone had this mixed in with work and vce?

It depends on the work as well. I had a job in yr 11 and worked at Hungry jacks (the burgers are better at hungry jacks, especially when you get them for free :D) but found it was quite tiring. It was inside a shopping center and so I could only work weekends. I worked Fridays and Saturday's and I'm not just saying this but those 2 were the busiest days of the week. I couldn't work Sundays because of my tuitions. So it got a bit stressful because well it took my Friday and Saturday because even though I had Saturday evening to study I was hell tired and felt lazy so it lead to me having to do ALL my weekend homework Sunday which then all equals no play time :(. It depends on every person like mentioned above so if you feel you can handle it then go for it. After all the extra money is always good :)

I also had a job in year 11, starting off at 8 hours a week before lowering that to 4 hours. Unfortunately I sustained a bit of an injury about a year in (I'm a particuarly clumsy one) and I resigned after that.

I worked at coles on the register and found it could become tiring at times, particuarly when it got closer to exams and the shops got busier. So this year I'm going to do some relaxing volunteer work. :)

I reccomend you find something outside of school you can do, but don't over do it.

I worked about 15 hours a week during year 12 can cut it back to about 10 hours just before exams. In addition to this i had sporting commitments 3 nights a week but both work and sport commitments helped me so much with my time management skills.

I think i should have cut work and sport back in year 12 especially when it was 30 hours a week which i couldnt study but you have to find a balance that is right for you

I worked between 8-16 hours a week during Year 12, depending on how heavy my study load was that week. Although it took up my time, I found I achieved more on the nights I was working than on the nights I wasn't. I would realise that I only had until 5:30 to study and only after 9:00, so I was far more motivated and would often get more done than if I wasn't working. It actually helped me work more efficiently :)
During exams I took time off though, just so that I could study without having to stop for work.
