what is mean standard deviation, for eg let's say the find the percentage of students greater than 14 percent and it give us the standard deviation but not the mean how are we supposed to find the mean

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by the 'percentage of students greater than 14 percent'.
That implies 86%, but I don't think that's what you want.

For the normal distribution, the mean would be found by applying the equation

You can do it on your calculator, have a look at the 68-95-99.7 rule in your textbook.

Don't worry, in the Essentials book, they do mention the equation and explain how to use it so you're not really confusing anyone.  :)
