I've been under the impression there just weren't many to begin with.

Yeah but most differential equations on population state that if the population is less than a certain amount, then the population will die out.

Is that a challenge?

To do what..? Breed physicists? :P

Precisely.
Geneticists breed physicists. Without Geneticists, physicist will never exist. Unless artificial selection occurs, physicists will eventually die out :(
