A hockey player receives a ball travelling at 3.5 m/s parallel to the sideline and sends it directly across the
pitch to another player at a speed of 2.5 m/s. The ball of mass 200 g is on the hockey stick for 135 ms.

a) What is the change in velocity of the ball?
Is it just 1 m/s ?

b) What is the average acceleration of the ball?

c) What is the average force applied to the ball by the stick?

a) Let velocity towards the shooter be negative EDIT: Major stuff up  :-[  It can't be 1m/s!!!

b) a = 44.4m/s2

shouldn't change in velocity be -1 m/s?

it depends on which direction u take as

i got when taking the initial direction as

when taking the reverse.

yeah should either be -1 or 6.

if were not given which direction to use as - or + we need to assign one and show it right?

yes if its not given, u take one direction and u MUST show it as .

No directions of velocities aren't opposite, they are perpendicular so change in v; you use pythag and must draw a vector triangle of final - initial where younuse arrows for final and initial velocities

Ok I'm going to use vectors to simplify things!

u = (0,-3.5)m/s & v = (-2.5,0)m/s

a) v = v - u = (-2.5,3.5)m/s
   |v| = 4.30m/s

b) v = at a = 31.86m/s

c) F = ma F = 6.37N
