Why do so many people find this area of study so difficult?

I'm not sure. Perhaps because why things are happening isn't explained too well.

I actually found electronics to be one of the easier areas of study for me. Perhaps that is just because my teacher taught us why things were happening and how it happens. Or maybe because we got to use electricity to set fire to paper >:]

i guess isn't really palpable.... we can't really see the current flowing through resistors... ::)
but for something like motion... it works!!! .  :D

Why do so many people find this area of study so difficult?
maybe coz it's boring for some people.

It's too applications-oriented. If it were a course on 'Electricity' rather than 'Electronics' then it would be more interesting.

An analogy is learning to run before learning to walk.

I think that is a good point, it totally isn't logical, you just gotta learn how it works by pure theory

It's just like the hand-wavy magnetism stuff, which is why it isn't logical. It isn't really 'theory', it's more like 'do this then this then this to get this'.

I didn't mind the electronics part, but the way it's taught may be the main issue.

In uni electromagnetism is a really fun area because you get down to defining the most fundamental concepts.

Completely agree, /0. At olympiad camp we pretty much did the VCE EM course in around 30 seconds, and it made more sense because we knew what was going on. EM should at least be before electronics in the course anyway...

But all VCE physics is like that. "Heres how you do it and heres a completely pointless and quick explanation of why it does it so you can write it in the exam. I'm not going to show you how the formula is derived or anything else."
