^ we have just finished covering acid/base and redox.  we have our gravimetric and volumetric sac over the next two weeks.  we are going so slow!

We're working on Chapter 5: Redox, but I'm working through Chapter 10, all those confusing organic pathways. I also need to re-look over all the Spectroscopy stuff :(

Hmm being up to redox might be a bit too slow? I mean you gotta do like the rest of the stuff a few weeks prior to the end of term 2 if you think about it and term 1 is about to end.

Yeah, we're going a little too slow, I think. But hopefully everything will work out :)

do you guys have any holiday classes that will be running in your school?

We're up to chromatography... but apparently he was very disappointed with the SAC and people not knowing n=c*v  and other basic things like that...so we've gone back to gravimetric and volumetric.

Yeah, one three hour class. Weird thing, first time I've even come across the concept...

same.  spectroscopy and chromatography are really important and difficult concepts to grasp, so the clever people at heinemann decide that they will be very vague on those two topics and only give them a chapter each, whilst they waste like 6 chapters on repetitive year 11 crap.

anyone care to explain the difference between UV/Vis Spec and colourimetry?
i have no idea how they are different, unless colourimetry only uses visible light and can't select an optimal wavelength...

nah, except for bio because we only get one week holiday as that class is only 3 hrs 15 mins a week vs. all my other classes which are 3 hrs 30 mins each week...

yeah, usually with 30 min break though, so it's only really 3 hours :)

Damn, that's awesome so then you can be switched on an focused straight 3 hrs instead of wasting the 1st 10 minutes of every period to start tuning in lol

Ugh yes, Heinemann is so dodgy with explaining chromatography/spectroscopy. I'm reading through those chapters in the Jacaranda book and it's becoming clearer.

Pretty sure colorimetry shines the complementary colour through the solution and absorbance is read, but multiple substances in the solution could be the same colour so it's not very usefull unless the sample is completely pure. UV-VIS  chooses a frequency from a substance’s spectrum and measures the radiation absorbed at this particular frequency.
