Spectroscopic Questions

1. Is spectroscopy only used for metals?

I am not sure how to refer to the substance under investigation such as a solution with iron which is used in AAS to find its concentration
2. Do I call the substance sample, metal sample, atoms, element, compounds? (i.e. pure and when in solution)

spectroscopy used to determine chemical composition: the use of spectroscopy to determine the chemical composition, energy levels, and molecular structure of substances (not necessarily metals) :D i think...

the substance can be called a sample...(so u can nvr be wrong) and if its in a solution u say solution...i suppose... :P

So if its a solution of dissolved iron we can just refer to it as solution of unknown concentration? Or we need to be specific - unknown concentration of an (atom/element/compounds not sure what to refer to it as)

So we can't ever use "metal sample" since its never only metal besides the flame test?

spectroscopy involves substances absorbing energy. the effect of radiation from different partys of the electromagnetic radiation on atoms and molecules can tell us:

1. what type of molecules/atoms are present (qualitative analysis)
2. how much of a specific molecule/atom is present (quantitative alaysis)
3. the structure and the bonds of the molecule
