I did a practice exam and the question was "Quan was seriously injured in a road accident and remained in a coma for several weeks. Quan's repiratory and circulatory system continued to function whilst he was unconscious." Part C of the question then asked "Describe one function that would indicate the other branch (in this case, the somatic nervous system) of the PNS was also functioning"

I didn't know what to put for this and my friend also thought the question was wrong. unless of course Insight just decided to throw in a trick question...

Yeah that is really strange, you would think only the autonomic system was working, due to Quan being in a coma...

Sounds like a dodgy question.

I suppose if you wanted to sound smart, you can add Enteric nervous system as well and just say bowel function(don't do this, I doubt most Psychology examiners would know what this is).

Let me have a think about this.

Well it says describe something that would make you think their somatic n.s. was working. Maybe you could say responding to somatosensory information such as touch or temperature?

that's exactly what I wrote, but it's one of those dodgy answers you just put down so you have something to get marked on rather than trying to indicate it's a flawed question (I doubted there'd be any trick questions in the exams)

thanks for all your help

I'm not sure what the insight answer was. the version I got (which was downloaded off this website) didn't come with them and I couldn't find the answers. quite irritating.

The answer says:

If the patient moved a skeletal muscle such as the arm or leg, it would indicate the functioning of the somatic nervous system.

Mark allocation:

1 mark for giving an example of an action initiated by the somatic nervous system.

Explanatory notes:

While this answer is really providing two pieces of information, it makes sense that you would name the somatic nervous system as part of the answer.
You could also include a response that indicated the sensory function of the somatic nervous system.

So yeah I think the answer is either moving a skeletal muscle or responding to sensory information. But I think the question is still a bit dodgy.

Heh, I would've put my answer in, just for the lulz (again, don't actually do that)
