personally id on't really see what's so hard about significant figures...
yeah this is what i thought- where i had never gotten them wrong before but after that exam apparently you have to use (l) in so many more reactions then just 'water' as we were told >__>
i think i've learned now so it's fine but it was just a shock haha.

what state is required?
it's pretty much just (l) for pure liquids such as all components of an esterification reaction, as two pure substances of an alcohol and carboxylic acid are needed, to form a pure esterification and water. all are (l), i just pretty much think about it like this, also with:
and (aq) is used for substances that have been dissolved and the ions formed/bonded, such as
Na(s) dissolved in water becomes Na+(aq) and then reacts with other compounds to form an aqueous NaCl(aq).
