Vectors and Max/Min values of speed

When I have a vector equation, to find the minimum and maximum values of the speed, that is   why do lie within these values?

The normal range of is so squaring that will only return values between

I'd hate to sound really dumb, but here it goes. Is that a property that is known and remembered or can it be proved?

if you square any (real) number you will only get a positive number.. so all the values of x for which sin(x) or cos(x) return negative values will be positive values for sin^2(x)
