Ive recently approached my VCE coordinator with my intention regarding wanting to withdraw from IT: software development for the rest of the year and just scrap the study score. my reasoning is i have absolutely no interest in the subject and im not doing particularly well (B+ for first sac without study). he said i had to talk to a bunch of higher-ups and stuff, and i talked to the vice principal and hes saying initially no. if i continue with this subject, im expecting somewhere around 30 SS (scaled down another 3-4 after). i feel like the time i gain from dropping the subject could be used to study and in the end will get me a higher atar than the 10% will.

any thoughts/advice? greatly appreciated
its hard to study for a subject you "hate", i dunno how it'll go around exam time if i do keep it

also does anyone know if the final decision to drop a subject is up to the student? cos im fearing some dick teacher is too lazy to have to do paperwork and will just decline my request for that reason

Can't you just keep attending the class for it and just not study for it?

Just rock up to class and give pass-standard SACs
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

i would if i could, but i just cant stand another hour in that class. i just scrapped the sac half way and now doing other subjects in class time (in the class, just on my own in the corner). the point i was trying to ask was if the 100+ hours i get to do private study/hw would help contribute to an overall enter than the ~3 to aggregate ever would. something tells me i wont even use that extra time efficiently

I've seen this dilemma pop up many times and indeed had it a couple times myself. Basically without going into all the deep detailed points and what i think about this problem you have to weigh up 3 points:
*How much do you need this subject?
*How big of a study score you will get out of this subject and how much will it improve your enter
COMPARED TO
*How much will your enter increase or decrease if you drop it

I guess you also have to figure in how much you like it. From what you've said here however, i see no point in you keeping it and i think you should drop it. Even if you dont make up the extra 10% in other subjects as a result of this (depending on where you're at, if your studying as hard as you can for everything ect,) just not having to show up to that class will be helpful enough for you wont it?

In this situation i'd suggest you drop it.

(sorry if this doesnt make much sense... its really late... i even caught myself using the "how much bigger")

i tried the enter calc with/without the extra 6th subject and it only changes my enter by about 1 (92.8 with, 91.7 without)
seems like it might make a big difference :S ahh *bangs head* dont know

Don't want to scare you but some chick who previously went to my school missed out on the fringe enter of her course i think it was by like 0.5 or something but that was fringe.

Well its totally up to you but if its unbearable id just drop it considering all these things

I think at this point you cant offically drop it... its sort of a more you stop doing anything related to it or show up kind of arrangement and it shows up as a fail on your results instead of just not being there. well thats what they told my mate at my school who wanted to drop something

You aren't really doing THAT badly. If you stopped studying and used class time to study for other subjects and then sit the exam, you'll get a better score than zero, so yes, that's worth it. Hell, if you were to pay attention in class and do the bare minimum, without any private study you're still better off and you'd be able to finish the exam, which is always a good thing.

If you want more time to study for your other subjects, you still have it. Especially since the hardcore studying happens during SWOTVAC anyway and you can totally neglect IT in that time.

With 5 subjects, I highly doubt you have insufficient time to fit all of your study in. Maybe you need to consider your organization and overall efficiency.

yeah i guess... i did 0-30 minutes hw/study every night, then a week before mid year exams about 14 hours a day. now im trying to average at least 30 hours a week for the rest of the year. VN has given me all the motivation and inspiration i need :D
