When drawing structural formula, is it necessary to put them in a tetrahedral arrangement or is a linear-type drawing acceptable? What is required for the exam?

since you are drawing hydrocarbons, they really should be drawn in their tedrahedral arrangement, with double bonds being linear. i don't think its completely necessary but ive heard in the past that they have tried to make it so it is. it may only be important when you understand concepts like saturated vs non saturated fats, where when there are double bonds you can see 'kinks' in the chain, etc.
basically: if you can draw them in their proper arrangement.

I would say yes in the exam, most likely you will only draw 1 molecule so do it with no regret. But in practice exams and such, just draw them so that its convenient.
