Hi all,
I am suddenly confused with what I need to fulfill in my course.
I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts (Global) and also a Diploma in languages.
So... I just realised the Diploma of languages is on TOP of my course, right? :S

Coz I was going to double major in International studies and German but if im doing German as the diploma of languages will I have to do a minor or a second major?

Yes it's on top of your course. It's essentially like doing a major in German so you'll need to pick another one for your arts degree.

I believe it adds another year to your degree.

you can overload and do summer subjects and then it doesn't.

not sure about monash, but for melbourne this is definitely possible (summer subjects+overloading)

The diploma subjects aren't offered during the summer semester as far as I know.

Yeah I know I'll have to have another major, so that will be international studies. I meant, if I'm majoring in International Studies and majoring in German through the diploma of languages, will I have to have a completely different minor/second major on top of that, since the dip of languages is separate?

Because the way I planned my degree I was just double majoring in International Studies and German, but if I have to do a minor with it, I'm going to be stuck because my first year sequence was Journalism which I hate, and it's too late to minor in anything else.

Argh, I hope I'm making sense.

im sure you could do language subjects (if it was french, spanish, and there's another) during the intensive summer semester at melb uni and get credit for it anyways.

Why did you need the Diploma in Languages for German if you were planning on majoring in German anyway for your Arts degree? Couldn't you drop the diploma and just double major in International Studies + German? That way you don't have to pay extra for the Diploma and you don't have to pick another major/minor.

I would assume you can't major in German once you are already taking a Diploma in Languages. You will probably have to major in something else within your Arts degree.

Is doing a diploma in languages ontop of your course alot of work? i am considering doing that next year when i start university.

Unless you overload, you will do 4 subjects per semester. Doing a diploma doesn't change this, it just means the additional language subjects will replace one of your other subjects each semester. The amount of subjects you do each semester remains the same, although as you now have more subjects to get through, you will need an extra year to finish.

I'm also planning on applying for a diploma in languages next year. I'm probably going to drop one law subject each semester for my language subject, so the diploma may end up reducing my workload (at the expense of a longer degree).

Also keep in mind that a diploma in languages costs around $5000 in total.

See a course advisor.

You can probably drop the diploma and get the credits transferred to your degree.

A stupid mistake, I guess. I knew I wanted to major in International Studies and German and I thought if I applied for a diploma of languages I'd get to do more language units meaning by the end of it I'd be better at German (plus I guess it looks more impressive on top of your degree).

Now my options are to either drop the diploma, or minor in Journalism. I'm still a bit confused about how everything will all fit into my degree but I'll see how I go in Journo this semester then see a course advisor before we need to pick subjects for next year.

Thanks for your help with clearing that up :)
