Did you make use of tutorials and consultation hours for the subject?

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to appeal against my result of 48% in Calculus 1. I had a lecturer who couldnt explain the concepts of the course clearly (he even used a blackboard). The notes we bought had minimal worked examples, as we had to copy the examples off the lecturer (his explanations were very vague). Are these arguments, coupled with some other ones, an appropriate basis for an appeal or not?

If you contact your coordinator and (politely) explain that you were disappointed to learn that you failed and was wondering if your mark could be adjusted to a 50% so that you don't have to repeat, you might be in luck. It does depend on the good will of whoever reads your email, but it's a shot worth taking.

Otherwise, you can ask for a remark of your exam and see if that gets you the extra 2% needed. If you ask about this, you'll get a stock email with information about it and the risks and you can then decide based on that.

I honestly don't think that what you've said is grounds for an appeal. Using a blackboard doesn't mean anything and copying worked examples from a lecturer is pretty standard. If the lecturer was so sub-par, you'd expect the rest of the class to have failed as well...did they?

If you've attended every single tute, and they took attendance for it, then it shows you actually tried so they might boost your mark to a pass

Because you're so close to passing, it's definitely worth looking into it. Talk first with your tutor and/or lecturer. If that doesn't work, contact the head of faculty with your concerns. If that still doesn't work, if you're a member of the Student Union, they should be able to represent your interests to someone important. I don't think anyone with a 48% should automatically fail, you should at least have a supplementary exam made available to you.

I'm sorry to hear about your mark.  I did the same subject as you and I can understand having been to and sampled all the lecturers' lectures, the standard and the method of delivering the same material varies from each person.  While some are detailed and very thorough, there are some who are quite vague as you said.

On a side note, I bet it was one of the "Alex's"?
