Introducing English FreeCycle!

Freecycling is a straightforward thing. You've got a usable item that you don't want anymore, so you give it away to someone else. It reduces waste and increases your karma. Appliances, furniture, clothing- the list goes on. It only makes sense to apply it to intellectual property as well.

More than 40000 students sit the VCE English Exam every year. The VCAA website states that about 9% get 40 or more. That's almost 4000 people. Even on the assumption that they each only write one excellent practice essay, that's a lot of top-quality writing! Where does it all end up after year 12?

Thrown out mostly, or buried somewhere in the computer harddrive or filing cabinet- not being of any use to anybody.

Good writing shouldn't be limited to just being stepping stones to a study score. Your hard work can be put to good use and shared with other students facing the same challenge with English FreeCycle. Reading other people's work is a great way for students to improve their own writing and makes a lot of difference for those who mightn't be able to afford a tutor and live off study guides from the library and internet.

It's hoped that English FreeCycle will eventually become a .org database of original writing that will make example essays easily accessible to secondary students, and a launchpad for English enthusiasts to publish their study guides and critiques on literature.

Submissions can be made by attachment to email or hard copies can be arranged to be picked up from the Melbourne CBD, the University of Melbourne or Box Hill Library.

Writing is not limited to VCE English- if you've got A or A+ grade old essays from VCE Literature, English years 9 or 10, or completed IB English, they are definitely most welcome. If you're not sure as to the standard of your essays and whether or not they'd be suitable, not to worry, send them in and we'll be able to objectively moderate them. For the VCE English enthusiasts, original study guides or critiques are also welcome submissions.

Submissions must be original works.

Writers make submissions voluntarily and will be acknowledged in the Contributors section of the site. Upon making a submission, they may elect to post a short description of themselves on the page, including any tutoring work they may be offering. Writers retain the right to remove their work at any time. They may choose to have their work published under their real names or pseudonyms.

Dig out your old essays and be a part of this exciting new initiative. The official launch is on August 15. In the meantime, you can see the site under construction at www.englishfreecycle.weebly.com

Submissions, and any queries can be directed to [email protected]
