Hmm I'm under the impression you "really" choose your major in second year. All you need is ESD1, ESD2, Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra in first year and then you can choose any Systems major in second year. I think that was the point of introducing the ESD subjects - to give you a form of common first year.

Yes however it's pointless if you already know what stream of engineering to do. My friend currently does those subjects and says he feels sorry for the chemical engineering because ESD only spends briefly on fluid mechanics for chemical engineering whilst those students have to endure through the other streams. This is one reason I'm glad I chose Monash over Melbourne and got to spend a full semester doing just chemical engineering :)
