Number patterns Q's

Questions that are worded with 'at the start' or 'at the end' tend to confuse me :-\
I've seen a lot of other questions that have been worded similar to this and my question is
How would you know if its the one you round off or the number previously (does that make sense? :P)

I get your problem. Had to think about it too for a while.

So what I did was go you have 160000 at the start of the 1st year. If you increase by 2% then you are in effect increasing by 1.02 and at the end of the year you decrease by 4000.

Working out a rough equation 160000*1.02 - 4000 = 159200 so this equation nicely models the cattle at the start of years so you don't have to think so hard about it.

Becuase its just one more step all you do is take the start of the second year like we did with the 160000 (start of the first year) and go

159200*1.02 - 4000 = cattle at start of third year = 158384  -> A

For the next part i already answered it:

next one = 1.02previous -4000 with the first being 160000
