L,M and N each have their axes perpenidular o the plane of the paper. Resultant magnetic field at position M = 1.0* 10^-3 T north west.

What does the "Resultant magnetic field at position M = 1.0* 10^-3 T north west." actually mean? does it mean the magnetic fireld is in NW and how does it affect the direction of the magnetic force?
a) a current of 2A flowing through M into the page
b) a current of 1.0A flowing through M out of the page.

I worked out the magnitude but cant work out the direction.
Please explain how u got the direction.
THANK YOU.

Right hand rule - direction is OUT of the page.

i did but i dont understand how they get north east instead of west as the direction.
put ur thumb into the page, south pointing to your body (according to the compass) and then the force( palm is west)
hence i dont get it... D:

Look at point N. The current is into the page. Use the right hand rule. The magnetic field lines should be clockwise. Draw circles around point N. Do like a tangent to the circle to the far left of the circle. At point M the magnetic field should be upwards. Did you get that?

At point L the current is into the page.using the right hand grip rule the magnetic field lines are clockwise as well. Now draw circles around point L to represent the field lines. Do a tangent at the bottom of the circle. You should get an arrow pointing to the left ie west.

Do vector addition one going north and the other west. The resultant should be NW.

My diagram shows what happens as a result of the current at point N. Anywhere on that green line the net magnetic field will be north.

Hope I answered your question.  :)

Ummm sorry but that made no sense to me at all. Would you be able to explain a bit more? I got confused when you said circle the second time.
