Instead of going X's novel, Y........
a SLIGHTLY less generic way of doing it that I tend to use is how the main plot device or concept in the book connects to the prompt.
Like in Look Book Ways, you'd be going on about characters contemplating life.death scenarios.
So, for most prompts, you MAY be able to say:

As many of the characters in Look Both Ways contemplate the transient nature of existence, Watts positions the reader to observe how ___________ *prompt contention here which is somehow related to transient nature of existence, fiddle with it a bit :D*

maybe: "In Look Both Ways, the general consensus is that with life, comes death."

Sorry for the crappyness, I don't do look both ways much.

yea yea i know== told u i pulled itout of my brain on the spur of the moment. Well, for my text, I think I can because my text is all about transformation from adversity, so yea, everything gets affected by the crisis in my novel because the author uses that as a means to explore everything else.

And as I said, it  gets tweaked according to the prompt. All opening lines start from some simple structure for me anyways. It said in the asterisks, you fiddle with it and associate the prompt with ur ideas.

an intro seems to me, to at least be slightly generic at least. there's not that much you can really do to make it sound outstandingly different, no book i've read has that many different elements that so many students in the state can write something substantially different from each other.

for example, while doing Poe there seem to be 3 main ideas from the prompts regarding characters which involve obsession, fear and insanity. how much variation is there in terms of saying "Poe explores insanity in his short stories?"

in your intro I would advise you to make sure that you've related it to the prompt, and that it introduces your contention/ point of view that you'll discuss in your piece. provided you do that, and word it coherently so it flows, I don't really see how you can go wrong.

you can of course, change around the structure of your intro a little, for example, instead of starting with "X's novel" you put that later in your introduction, perhaps around the mid point? it's a superficial change, but it may appear slightly different.

just introduce your points, and perhaps have a generic statement you can make about the text, after all, it may be mediocre, but it provides a jumping off point just in case you do get stuck. Not being an assessor I don't know how this would be received, but i'm sure it's not all they'd assess you on

my text response introductory sentence usually follows the pattern of "George Orwell's depiction of a dystopian society, 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' embodies the (enter prompt, Party), reducing humanity to primitive emotion under its tyrannical rule"

I pose no such threat!
perhaps we can form some kind of impenetrable alliance? One which will make those primitive slaves of the dollar shake to their very bone.

For if you do not agree, great harm will come to you and your stupid little haircut.. which is similar to mine.

(nice mole on your chin by the way)
