If you got a 40+ for English, click here!

Just wondering for you all out there (who got 40+ for English), what were your Unit 3 and 4 marks like out of 100?

Is it true that an A+ for each Unit needs roughly an 85 - 100 out of 100? And an A+ for the examination needs a 47 - 60 out of 60? I got these figures from the Graded Distribution tables for 2009.

My Unit 3 score is 90/100 and my Unit 4 score is 95/100.

Any idea if I can get at least a 44 in English? And to what extent are the SAC scores moderated by our exam performance?

What's your rank in your cohort? I wasn't even ranked in the top 20 at my school and managed to get a higher score than many of those who were.

It really comes down to exam score.

I went to Scotch College. Ranked in top 4 is great! Just do well with the exam, I know that 9/10, 9/10, 9/10 approximately yields a ~45 so yeah aim for that.

I got something along the lines of 88/100 for unit 3 and I didn't get results for unit 4 but I think it will be about 45/60. If I get 7,7,8 on the exam what can I expect?

The exam is the main determinant, yes

fwiw, I did very well on most sacs and got mid forties with lower exam scores. I didn't really bother about remembering/tallying my sac marks, but i probably got 190 or so?

If you apply for a statement of marks you will. I can't remember my individual scores...if I'm particularly motivated tomorrow I might go find the letter with them

I wouldn't bother trying to 'predict' your study score for English. There are far more important things to concentrate on than speculating over what marks you need to get a certain score. The danger in asking these questions is that you fall into the 'good enough' mode and end up not doing the best you can because you've convinced yourself you only need a certain mark to get the study score you want. Your main focus should be striving to do the best you can, rather than trying to quantify how much effort you should put into the exams.

Another problem is that predicting study scores, especially in English, is a very speculative exercise. 50% of your marks come from SACs which get moderated. I don't think anyone fully understands the moderation process for SAC marks, but it is clear that people can do surprisingly well despite not having the best SAC marks so long as they are strong in the exam.

Making a tentative assumption that you only need to get 'X' on your exam does not really help you. Its easy to get distracted with these sorts of questions when really you could spend this time studying instead.

quick question if i may,

im ranked approx 15-20, i feel that those ranked above me wont do too well in the exam in comparison to me (im working my ass off and all the times i have lost marks in SACs have been to silly mistakes)

i go to a really weak school where only <10 kids get over 90's, will i still be able to get a 40?

A 15 - 20 ranking is a bit low I'd say... but this system is mostly fair, in my opinion, and if you ARE working your ass off.. your hard work will be rewarded. In all cases, hard work will be rewarded. Those who do extremely well in the SACs, but bum out in the exam, will not be at an advantage.

The exam is the key point of difference - it is the exam that truly demonstrates a student's ability.

thanks for that :)

its just so frustrating, i got the top score for the first SAC, so i guess its only natural to assume that you will also do just as good throughout the year.
but ive lost marks on orals (which i think is crap) and stupid little things. my teacher said i could get a 43 (what she expects) although i think thats a little far-stretched!

take care

SACs are only a slight indication... look at the different factors that make SAC scores so unreliable:
- SAC topics being given a week before the actual SAC
- biased teacher marking (but I guess they are cross-marked)
- the fact that every school has different SAC topics
- etc.

You will do well, in my opinion, if you go hard at the exam! :D

Thats a generalisation, not necessarily the truth
A girl at my school stays back after school at least 3.5 hours everday studying hard, does all homework; everything she is told....
and then bam!!!! psych mid year = B (not what she thought she deserved)

I'm sure there are inumerous examples of people working extremely hard and then being let down

I had a question:

SO are the SAC rankings based on the entire english cohort or just the one class?
Also, let's say that one did do well on the SACS, but didnt do so well on the exam, would the SAC scores be pulled down?

Pretty sure it's the entire english cohort at your school.

Regarding the other question, a mate of mine got A+, A+, C+ for Business Management. Totally stuffed up the exam but his SAC rank saved his arse.

hmm. psych is a tricky one because if you don't follow really specific guidelines on how to write your answers you won't do well. So all the study in the world doesn't guarantee a good score in psych. There are many other subjects where this is not the case, but psych assessors are the most pedantic people. Also some textbooks are wayyy better than others. I know the heinemann one leaves out a lot of information while the grivas textbook is really really good. So you could know your textbook back to front but if its not a good one then that also affects your score.
