Chunking is ... the grouping of larger bits of information into smaller bits ( chunks) inorder to increase the capacity of short term memory.
e.g
123456789
can be chunked to
123 ... 456 ... 789 ...

now maintenance rehearsal is the ROTE REPETITION of information.
now maintenance rehearsal is the ROTE REPETITION of information.

when you think about something your STM is 'full' with that information, so I believe it would hav a capacity of one

also matt, the definition of chunking in the grivas textbook is grouping smaller bits of information into a larger group that can be remembered as a single group

You are right.
however i would disagree on ONE thing you said.
about the capacity of one.

since STM has a capacity of 5-9 items
even when you are repeating something over and over.... its not "full" by that item.

e.g ... you may try to remember the numbers 524 326 23
and you may be repeating it over and over
then you may type it on the phone.
when typing ... you extract "how to" or procedural memories .. to be manipulated in working memory

since working memory = STM

I believe that .. even if its unconscious ... its not limited to the ONE item that you are repeating.
however .. since its involved with STM .. maintenance rehearsal would have a capacity of 5-9 items
