Hi everyone,
I'm year 10 and have chosen my subjects for next year, studio arts is one of them (however I'm debating on switching to do biology)

What are the pros and cons in your opinion of studio arts?

Thankyou!
Julia

Well, I only did 3/4 studio, so I can't really tell you what year 11 is going to be like but...

Pros:
Easy - not many concepts at all, not difficult to learn etc.
Get to do something practical - this is something you can apply to real life without having to get a job/degree first
Fun - speaks for itself
Really, really easy - seriously, I'm in year 11 doing 3/4 SA photography and it's easier than all my other subjects
Get a break from all your other subjects - different emphasis in study design, different type of teaching etc.

Cons:
Can be a lot of work if you leave it all to the last minute

That's about it, there's only one con as I see it. I would definitely recommend doing this subject.
2010: Studio Arts [40]
2011: English [41], Methods [35], Specialist [24], Physics [40], Further [41]

ATAR: 94.15

hey -
I also did 3/4 this year (year 11) and I did year 11 last year. year 11 was good fun. we got to look at different mediums and ideas throughout the year and then in 3/4 you get to focus on your own main idea for pretty much the whole year which is good too.
I also did 3/4 biol this year, so I think i can give you a good comparison?
our studio arts class this year was small, and I didn't spend a lot of time in the class because I had subject clashes.. anyways i really enjoyed it. I did textiles (fashion pretty much) and photography. I found It was a lot of work, and took up heaps of time. i don't know if this is a refelction of my own organisation :S but when it ccame to folios and the way I presented my final outcomes I put in a LOT of time. especially in the week or two before i had to hand in my folio.. I wouldn't call it easy.. the work its self is easy I guess, but I struggled because a) I bit off more than I could chew with my projects and struggled for time, b) I found the theory (still do) pretty boring.. umm yeah basically you've GOT to be organised. But you can have heaps of fun with the work you do. especially if you've got a creative bug.

I LOVED biology! yr 11 and 12. but I may have a very different opinion to most. it's strange that I did art when my other subjects were 100% maths and science, so just remeber i'm a very science-y person.

they're very different subjects. I liked biol because I had a great teacher and class and I loved the topics we did. I didn't like studio because my class wasn't the best and I was often confused by the topics and concepts. I liked the way science is more straight forward... but then I think you can be very proud of what you achieve in studio. you get two full folios of work and your final pieces out of it. it can be very satisfiying and folios are good if you're looking at applying for a design/ art course or something.

Ok... i've rambled on enough basically:
studio: the work is fun, and it gives you freedom and it's relatively easy. there's only a tiny amount of theory which is a little dry, and I found it very time consuming - which is why I accelerated it, so I wouldn't be doing it in yr 12.
biology: the work can be interesting, but the concepts are hard. the work is hard. It's great if you love science and have that kind of mind, but if not it can be difficult, and if you don't find the stuff intersting it will be hard to motivate tyourself to do the work. I personally loved it. - my favourite subject. we went to the zoo :D

Not sure what else i can say - hope I havn't made the choice harder for you! :P

Also - If anyone here is studying for our studio exam on wednesday help!!! i'm not one to enjoy the theory and i'm struggling. how are you studying? what issues are you doing? I still haven't decided :S - i'm also lacking heaps of motivation to study.. eek!

A lot of time and money if you want a really quality folio. Don't do it as a bludge subject or to fill in gaps in timetable. Do it if you love photography or you want to do it in the future.

I've really enjoyed my year.
