Hey guys this is probably stupid question but i can't seem to work it out, it's from TSSM 2010

Question 3.
On a map, where the scale is 1:1000, the area of a particular land enclosure is 5cm^2. The actual area of the land enclosure, correct to the nearest hectare, where 1 hectare equals 10000m^2, is
A. 5
B. 50
C. 500
D. 5000
E. 50000

I chose E but the answer they've given is A

Their logic is :

5 x (10000)^2 cm^2 => 50000m^2 or 5 hectares

Is it just a mistake that they didn't square the 10000? or am i missing something reallyyyy obvious haha

thanks guys

I don't think that the correct alternative is shown at all.
A scale of 1:1000 means that 1cm on the map represents 1000cm on the land (or 10 metres)
Therefore represents on the land

Then must represent on the land

This is only 0.05 Hectare which is not offered as an answer.

Using their style of calculation:
on the map represents on the land

Their line, as written by you, should read 5 x (1000)^2 cm^2 => 5 x (10)^2 m^2 = 500m^2 or 0.05 hectares

oh woops, my bad
the scale was meant to be 1:10000, not 1:1000
but i still don't see how they got the answer unless they just had a typo

With the scale of 1:10000, the calculation becomes

on the map represents    or    on the land

Since Hectare, then Hectares which is answer A

As you thought it was E, then maybe you had forgotten to convert your final answer to Hectares.
