Just wondering how long we should be aiming to spend on the MC part of the exam.

Honestly, the rule of thumb is a minute and a half to two minutes per question, so max 45 minutes for all the multiple choice
I ignore that bs and always do the extended response first though personally, purely because they're worth so many more marks.

i was told for any exam, 1 minute 1 mark but Natters point of 1.5min to 2min is reasonable still. Less pressure as well and guaranteed marks in the bag. But if you're a strong student, go for the extended section. Multiple Choice for slightly weaker students and you can build confidence.

To find out how much time you should spend on each question, find out how much time yuo get per mark. So for spesh exam 2, 120/80=3/2 therefore 1min and 30 secs for each MC.

Personally, i try to get through the MC in 20-25 minutes since they're boring and annoying.

I do a couple of MC in reading time and get say the first 5 done in 3 mins that way, then go onto ER and come back to finish MC. 1-1.5 mins is about right but remember there is always a couple of tricky MC questions.

dont forget you can always guess the multiple choice much easier than guessing the extended response, so if by some freak accident you end with 20 marks left to get with a minute left, you can (with average luck) get 5 of those if theyre multiple choice, as opposed to one or two if you're really lucky in the extended response
