Confused about a MAV questions

I used det to find a< (1/4), hence chose C, but the answer was E. Can anybody help explain why 0 isn't part of 'a'?

I says in the q a is a non zero constant

let them equal to each other, then times through by x

rearrange to get into quadratic form.  The find the value of a for discriminant >0

y=0 only intersects once...
