Quick Normal Distribution Clarification

Hi all,

Just a quick clarification:

When representing the given information for a normal probability distribution, is it:

X~N(mean,var(x))

or

X~N(mean,standard deviation).

Just been given some conflicting messages.

Thanks in advance.

X~N(mean,var(x))

wtf. I've always used X~N(mean,sd). I thought that was the convention.

I just did a quick google search also, and it says that this is the notation.

That's what I was taught too (X~N(mean,sd). I think :|
My brother told me I should just write in words that it's a normal distribution, and then write mean= ...... and sd=.......
*shrug*

My textbook says its variance aswell

So X~N(mean,variance) OR  X~N(mean, sd^2)

Yeah, just checked the study design, and it uses variance:

" - standard normal distribution, N(0, 1), and transformed normal distributions, N(μ, σ2), as examples
of a probability distribution for a continuous random variable..."

Hope I don't trip up on this one; so used to using sd now.

can we simply write

normal, mean = 10 and sd = 5 ,
(for example )
