Just wondering if anyone is interested in talking about the T&T Quranic section of the exam. We just had a long catch-up class in our school to go over all the small problems in content- and the fact almost all of us had forgotten what it was we had to study :-\ But a good revision day.
We were told that for the exegesis- the easy part is to get the context- the next is to incorporate all the highlighted words in the explanation- and after that act as if know what the rest of text alludes to...sounds OK
But I'd like to know how much are we expected to write? in 2 hours? and apparently dot points are Ok if we are really struggling for time...Any comments?

hey, I'm doing the Quranic section.

You can write in dot points, but make sure you give concise explanation on them rather than 'listing'. I like mine in a essay format. Three pages should be fine, apparently the booklet's a very small anyway. Start practising now under time condition, making sure you answer every part of the category.

What do you mean by this? How exactly do you write yours?

I usually start my intro with the context, then the paragraphs i have is mixed between the underlined words, historical references, people and place, significance..Then my conclusion will end with the "Significance of the Author's community" -Refer to Allah (Swt) and the message sent to the prophet ( peace be upon him) & his companions..

Yes, I see what you mean. The highlighted words if seen together should link together and point to a certain theme. That usually is the idea that rests at the core of the answer. The inclusion of the highlighted words in the answer is good (of course they can all be alluded to in the beginning- but then not a very sophisticated answer). I think that a couple of lines that give an overview of the theme and how it relates in Islam in general is important. The reason that I asked about the pages- I read that in the assessors report 1.5 lines per 10 mark short questions is 'sufficient'! If that is so then we're talking about 12 pages- and in 2 hours???

Also if we quote (for the essay questions) are we only to quote from Azam Malik or Taqiuddin or can we use Pickthall, Abdullah Yusuf Ali? Because I wasn't sure I resorted to using Malik only.

Only Quote from Azam Malik..Taqiuddin is no longer used, and VCAA only relies on Malik. If you use others, it is possible that the examiner may know what your saying..especially if it happens to be non-muslim marker.
Which exam assessment is that? Don't worry too much about the time..if you practise, hopefully you'll make it, and that's if you don't have mind blanks. I don't think 12 pages is what we are looking at, i think more of 3-5 max, and that's on a A4 booklet.

I'm pretty sure the chief assessor mentioned not to give a general overall of what you know. If you attended the september revision day, you might know what i mean. It's better to be specific to the text that you are given and in that context, don't just plainly give what you know. ( although it can be so tempting ! ) If you still do so, then just make it brief.

Malik is the translator of the Quran :P

What you should be quoting is the Quranic verses which support your topic, and they must be from the set/special study.

Sorry, I said 1.5 'lines' I meant to say 1.5 pages. Anyway I guess we can only write as much as we possibly can. I got this format from the report as well - it outlines the elements that have to be included in the exegesis and the marks that are given accordingly:

• context*: a maximum of four marks (one for naming, one for describing, and two for the meaning or
significance)
• historical or sociocultural setting and people, places and historical material of significance (where
appropriate)*: a maximum of twelve marks (one for naming, one for describing, two for relevance, and the
remainder for an analysis)
• literary form and/or techniques*: a maximum of five marks (one for naming, two for describing, and two for
the significance)
• meaning: a maximum of five marks (so that the total marks available for the entire response did not exceed
20).


I am not sure about your question  "Which exam assessment is that? "

As in, which examiners report was that in. 1.5 pages doesn't sound so bad, consider the booklet is like half of A4 size. I'm pretty sure that criteria changes from year to year, so it's just a rough guide but i hope they still use it.

Do you go to an Islamic school? King Khaled maybe?

Yep, King Khaled is right :-[. As for the 1.5 pages for 10 mark questions- that's in the 2010 sample exam that is on the vcaa website. The advice that they give is for each section...
But I was confused earlier by the sample 2010 exam quoting exegetical passages from other surahs...please don't worry about it I was told to disregard that as the surahs are still the lines from Al-Baqarah, Al-Talaq and As-Saffat. Which school do you go to?

I thought i was bad! I got to my second scrip book but i didn't finish it. Dude-how on earth did you manage?

Exam was really good-partially because my teacher's prediction of the question was there =]

anyway i'm so excited-i'm finished, last exam was just a moral booster.
