lol very true russ :D
i know the requirement for the rest of us is a minimum score of 70% in science-based subjects, but positions are very...limited...so its likely are much higher score is required.
oh btw, does anyone know what the situation is if you are rejected from entry to the DVM? can you attempt to get in the next year?

Not as far as I know, you can apply as many times as feasible for you to do so

she is referring to the guarenteed entry to the DVM if you have an ATAR of 98.5+ :)
im just trying to get an estimate of how many places are already getting taken up :S and how many positions will be left for me to fight for

im sorta considering DVM too in the future. depends.
anyways i think this is wat you're looking for:

Quote
How many Commonwealth
supported places will be
available in the DVM?
There will be at least 50 Commonwealth
supported places, and 120 places in total, in
each year of the DVM.

You need to do the Vet Bioscience major in addition to ATAR and GPA which is quota restricted. Also, the number of guaranteed places is probably limited otherwise no one else will be able to apply ;D It's best to check with the faculty for exact figured.

My understanding of applying for postgrad med is that you apply through ACER (unless you have a Guaranteed Place, in which case you apply directly to the Uni itself).  You put down a list of preferences with ACER for lots of Unis that offer postgrad (there are heaps of them), and it keeps working down the list until it finds someone who is willing to give you an interview (hopefully you get at least one).  For more information, there is helpful information in the latter parts of this: http://gamsat.acer.edu.au/images/documents/graduate_admission_guide_2011.pdf

Don't forget you can do your GAMSAT in 2nd year and again in 3rd year and only report the better result, if you feel so inclined.

As for the number with "guaranteed places", in the 99.90+ stream, I have met about a dozen in first year Biomed.  The average required is a 75% GPA (ie. H2A since GPA is calculated on the basis of H1, H2A, H2B, etc.)

There are certainly a lot more with 99.00+ in Biomed, with only some of them willing to take up a guaranteed full-fee place...

Also take into account that for grad med, you can only put down 3 preferences Australia wide, and are only allowed a single interview.

Yeah, that is it.  I am considering taking FFP if I don't get in anywhere after a second attempt (like after Biomed with honors).  That is if I even get 99.00 haha.  If I can't get the GAMSAT right after 3 attempts then I doubt I ever will.

But yeah, 250k for a medical degree.  Taking into account inflation, rising interest rates and housing prices, I may just get to own a property by 2050.  :P

Secretly I am still hoping for non standard entry into UNSW for 2012.  :)

If your further maths score is anything to go by, I think you're looking pretty good!

Thanks, but you will need to reconsider when you see my methods score in 12 days.  Absolute train wreck!

Yeah those three. Deakin and monash will offer much more hands-on practical experience compared to UoM though

Could you say hands-on experience is better than theoretical? Or do you need the knowledge before you jump in

You'll still be taught the theoretical knowledge but there are more opportunities to perform procedures

Is there any clear disadvantages going to monash or deakin compared to UoM besides the 'prestige'? Job-wise that is. UoM med is like fort knox... most likely i'll never get in there so gotta consider other options, and interstate requires too much money.
