Text Book

My school isn't getting us to buy text books for next year, instead the teacher is writing his own notes and giving it to us as a bundle of sheets. This is fine, however, I was looking to cover the physics course in the holidays so I'm going to need a text book (or some sort of notes...).

Anyway, I was wondering which text book is the best for physics? :)

Both MHS and MacRob will use Heineman Physics 3rd edition for 2011...if that means anything to you :P

Heinemann Physics FTW!!! Jacarnda has less questions and worse explanations. Nelson is even worse.

What MHS does is irrelevant, but follow MacRob. I say this because MHS still uses Maths Quest... DISGRACEFUL!

I have both :P ..MQ concepts/examples are much clearer...Essentials are just good at the questions :)

Same debate here: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,34229.0.html

Essentials win by far in concepts and questions.

Back on topic, once again would highly recommend the Heinemann Text as I ditched the Jacaranda one for Unit 2 exams and was successful with the Heinemann one. Good luck Comma!

Jacaranda is the worst; Nelson is better, but Heinemann is the best.

No. Do not get Heinemann. I used it all year, and it is the worst physics textbook. The explanations were so bad, and so hard to understand, that I had to search the net for copies of the other textbooks. Imagine spending hours re-reading the same page on Electronics and Photonics ot the Nature of Light and not understanding a word. It wasn't just badly written - the book skipped key concepts as well (and those concepts weren't covered in the 1/2 textbook either). Somehow they just expected you 'to know'.

Other than a glossy cover and some nice pictures, this textbook is crap. And lets not get started on the wrong answers at the back of the book. . .
IMHO, go with one of the other alternatives.

I liked Heinemann.

Questions aren't all great - often checkpoints is better, but explanations are pretty sound.

we use heinemann, it's pretty good, but jacaranda has much more challenging questions (our teacher just photocopied a few good ones for exam revision) but not all questions are relevant. i partially agree with chavi in that some concepts can be hard to understand due to the wording, so usually a teacher is required when working though heinemann.

Isn't that just how it is with all physics textbooks?

Comma, you may want to try what I am doing.

I am watching youtube videos on the relevant areas of the course.

The americans do well in their physics teaching ( they need to make bigger and better guns every day).

It's something different :P.

Just search e.g.. Momentum..

Most are very good!!!
