how good is the relief of having done it, and sitting back watch everyone else do it!

It a great feeling! Except that being 20th on the roll, meant me watching everyone before talking :(

haha i was like 5th, so I could just sit back and watch everyone else and tell myself that mine was better than theirs :P

Theres heaps of stuff about content here but I was just wondering about body language etc... should you walk around a little bit? Use hand gestures? I'm planning to memorize my oral so looking down shouldn't be a problem... but how can you engage the audience without using visual aids? And what body language makes you appear the most confident?

You could walk around a bit if you like but don't pace or have constant movement - you'll disorient the audience likely. Hand gestures are okay I think as long as they appear realistic and are used sparingly.

Engaging the audience - I think most of it is within the enthusiasm and conviction in your voice. Some of it is to do with eye contact (perhaps focus on the centre but pan occasionally so the sides don't feel totally ignored), and just general confidence in stance and all that. Obviously your posture should be upright but not mechanically so. Careful for crossed legs, hands in pockets, etc. which can make you appear casual. And yeah, just use common sense and don't forget to pace yourself and talk in a somewhat natural way.

Having watched about 20 orals over the last few days, here are a few things to avoid:

- Swaying. This may happen to you subconsciously (like me sometimes) but try and avoid it

- Shaking/trembling. A couple of people in my class were 'shaking' (more like vibrating) their legs and it was really distracting. Best thing to do is take about 10 seconds to just get a feel for the audience (just look around) before you start talking. This will settle the nerves.

- Too much pacing. It can get really distracting and can even make you look pretty stupid

- Looking at only one direction. Try to pan out the class as much as possible. If people are being looked at they are more likely to listen.

- Eye-contact. If using cue-cards, try to memorise them beforehand (I just had mine for back-up in case I forgot something)

- Monotone. The formula for a boring speech, try and emphasis some parts while lowering your voice for others.

- Continuous talking. By this, I mean include 2-3 pauses (but make them meaningful too)!

If it makes you guys feel any better, I've had a pretty terrible start (getting a B on my oral)
I honestly thought it was worth at least an A but ah well :(
