Hoy cr*p thats a big speech! Rule of thumb is 100-150 words/minute, 100 wpm if you are using pauses. I would halve what you have done.

Hahaha yeah my speech was originally similar, somewhere around 3000 words. Had to chop it up so bad.

WHAT!?!?! I can barely write 2000 words on anything!

I would recommend an optimum word length of of 600-900 words if aiming for a 6-8 minute speech. You have to be a really good speaker to keep the audience interested for any longer.

700-800 words is typical in a pre-prepared senior debating speech of 6-7 mins. 150 wpm isn't actually that difficult

Hahahaha oh yeah, I know I was pretty shocked when I checked the word count as well. Really frustrated as well, I really liked my first draft :/ Oh well.

EZ told us that 150 wpm was a safe level to be at, So 112 per minute isn't really that much. My speech isn't permitted to go for any longer than 7 minutes and atm I'm around 1300 words, but I've timed myself and it works well. Oh well, who knows. Presenting this Friday, so nervous.

I am a debater, so I have a fair idea of how much I need to cut. It runs at about 11 minutes at the moment and 9.5 is my ideal time. Thanks for the input :D

We could only make ours 5 minutes but mine went a bit over... is it accepted for teachers to mark us down on this?

If your material is good, and you had strong points with good articulation, your teacher wouldn't be marking you down but rather, be applauding you for such a marvelous performance :)

I agree with Water, your teacher must be super picky to put a mark down due to time limits (unless you were badly over, like 2+ minutes). And if you got a few laughs, then the timing shouldn't matter too much anyway! :)
