LOL I saw...I was just having a go at you. :)

Anyways...I'll just add something to this thread.

If you're actually good and enjoy mathematics, you should definitely go with Spesh as opposed to thinking that because you're good, it's easier to get a high mark in Further. Ignoring the extra perks of specialist such as scaling (and superiority!), so many people say that Specialist is such a great reward for the challenge it presents and you won't feel dissatisfied with your mathematical education. On the other hand...people at my school sleep during Further...
ATAR: 99.90
2010 - Classical Studies [45] - Mathematical Methods CAS [50 + Premier's]
2011 - English [49] - Specialist Mathematics [LOL]- Latin [LOL] - Chemistry [LOL] - UMEP Mathematics[LOL]

2012-2018 - UoM: Biomedicine, Chancellor's Scholars + Doctor of Medicine

Lol this is easy:
In further, you need to draw something called "Box and whisker plot"
In spesh, you don't.
Problem solved.

Hehe i have to agree with this.

I'm sure this topic has been done over and over, but I just can't justify the many many hours needed for a decent spesh score (I don't really want to settle for a low score).
Did eco this year, got 48 scaled.
Other subjects for next year (2011): Eng, MMM, Physics, IT-Soft Dev, then spesh or further
and ill be dropping one of physics, it, or the last maths (not methods) or my monash uni computer systems enhancement

future aim: technology startups, possibly though a computer science degree either here or in the US.

Don't do it (sm), not suitable for you, and go to us

this this this this so much.
im a person who hates statistics, even though its an essential part of life, and i hate those... stem and leaf, box and whisker plots etc... that was my reasoning for not doing further :)
Hehe i have to agree with this.

spesh is awesome
it makes vce that much more special
the awesome feeling when you get a question right after a million attempts is indescribable
class of 2010!

I was in the same dilemma.. and chose spesh!

you'll learn so much more from spesh, not only the maths but how to approach problems etc.
and it'll make methods seem so much easier :)

Hrmm...

The way I see it
 - I want the challenge, but just not when I have to get this damn ATAR score
 - But I don't want to use my time on spesh when I could be boosting my other subjects scores

Thoughts?
How much benefit would it be to Computer Science at uni? It isn't a prereq, i Know that.
2010: Eco 46
2011: Eng 45 MMM 47 MFM 50 Phy 44 MUEP Comp Systems 5.5
2012: Stanford University :)

Would you need to take a high level of maths for it? If so then i reckon you're better off with spesh because you can skip that unit thus allowing you to undertake other units.

Honestly, I don't really see why doing Spesh would make it harder to get a great ATAR score. Personally, I take comfort in knowing Specialist is probably going to be in my top 4 and will benefit my total aggregate greatly. My belief has always been that Spesh gives you a more solid chance of achieving a high score (after scaling), whereas Further has a higher chance of getting a top study score, but it can quickly become a rather average score with the loss of a few marks.
It does seem to take a fair amount of work, but if you enjoy it, you'll find that it doesn't actually take much time away from your other subjects.
That's just what I think...

I used to be a great advocate for further, but after experiencing one class I regret dropping methods even if my course doesn't need it. Further is drier than a sundried tomato.. It's literally class 1= median class 2= mode class = etc. Do something that will engage you, especially if you have the skill for it.

If you're doing a Computer Science degree then Spesh will come in handy as it will pretty much cover a lot of the maths you will have to do in University.
2012-2015 - Doctor of Medicine (MD) @ UniMelb
2010-2011 - Bachelor of Science (BSc) majoring in Pure Mathematics @ UniMelb
2009 - VCE [99.70] -- Eng [43] - Methods [44] - Chem [44] - JapSL [45] - Spesh [45] - MUEP Jap [5.5]
