I just got an offer letter for Diploma of Languages today after enrolling online a while ago (which I'll decline for this year as it'll screw up my course plan if I start from first year

Are there interviews to get into languages? or is this just for chinese?

I believe all languages have some form of placement test for those who have studied a language before, which includes an interview. My Japanese one lasted approx ~2 minutes.

O.k So i've never studied Arabic, however it is my first language (although I am far from fluent and can barely write) does that mean I can't do Arabic 1A?

hm I'm not sure for Arabic. I know that for UoM Chinese if you are ethnically Chinese you will automatically be placed into 4A or 5A, no matter how bad you suck at writing, as Chinese is special and uses completely separate tiers of classes for those with a background, and those without one.

Info for the placement test is here if you're interested http://www.asiainstitute.unimelb.edu.au/students/importantdates.html

Arabic
Prospective students of the Institute who have studied Arabic in the past are required to sit a placement test to ascertain the appropriate level of enrolment. The placement test for Semester One, 2011 will be held on Thursday, 24 February, 2011, 12.00 - 2:00pm, Room 113, Level 1, Sidney Myer Asia Centre

I guess you could just avoid the placement test and just enrol directly into 1A lol.

If you're Chinese they will put you in the background speakers stream (starting from 4A, a class which is 100% Chinese people), even if you can't write Chinese at all and speak badly/speak a different dialect. If you attempt to go into 1A I've heard they will kick you out. I've had a few friends be put into 4A as they were Chinese and couldn't hack it, so dropped out of Chinese completely as they wouldn't be allowed to drop into the normal stream.

good luck~

If you can't speak much at all they'll probably be nice to you. I *think* it's more they're strict on the people who can speak but can't write at all. 4A Chinese is pretty damn hard I hear.

Indeed.  4A is almost, if not exactly, insane (so I've haeard).  I had a friend who got 38 raw for Chinese in VCE, did a semester of 4A Chinese and that just screwed over his average.

Though you could argue that his work ethic has dropped significantly from VCE so don't let that discourage you or anything.
