Sorry to be going off topic, but I just wanted to ask, is there any disadvantage in doing Science instead of Biomed in terms of applying for PG Med, provided that you take all the prerequisite 2nd year subjects? Everyone I know who wants to do Med say that they would take Biomed if they didn't get into MBBS at Monash, but personally, I'd take Science for the opportunity to do Maths <3 and people just ask me why I don't just do Biomed...
No disadvantage to my knowledge.

From what I know, you can still choose exactly the same subjects as Biomed, but I'd want to check how much flexibility you have to do maths while keeping the prereqs for PG Med

Kinda off topic:

What % of people sitting the GAMSAT are actually able to get into PG Med, Optom or Dentistry? Are the people taking GAMSAT mainly biomed students?
2011: ATAR 99.50
2012: Bachelor of Biomedicine, UoM
2015: Doctor of Dental Surgery, UoM

According to a recent information session, about 50% of students in the MD were from UniMelb, with ~75% Biomed, and ~25% Science, or at least that's what I remember. :)
2009: Biology [46]
2010: Literature [44], Chemistry [50], Physics [46], Mathematical Methods CAS [46], Specialist Mathematics [42]

ATAR: 99.70

You can't choose the same subjects, they're all biomed exclusive (otherwise what's the point of the course...). You can reach the same level of knowledge by taking similar/other subjects, but they're not the same. WRT to doing maths, you could do a year of it in first year at least

Fairly high (assuming you include all unis in that). And no, not mainly biomed students

Nope, it was 50% Unimelb students and of that, two thirds were from Biomed and one third were from Science.

If anyone's interested in Physiotherapy, I remember they were saying they didn't have many Unimelb applicants and had a few places left over.

Well if you're sure you want to do PG med and just like maths you should definitely just do a concurrent diploma in maths along with a Bmed degree.
Or, if you are like me you may be entirely uncertain about your future prospects in the health and related sciences and thus choose science so that you have more major/pgrad options :)

You do not sound uncertain so I recommend option 1.

And here is a (terribly written) article on the topic

The cutoff for disadvantaged is going up from 88 to 92

I wonder if there is any chance of them going back in time and applying that to this year's intake  :'(

The university's student union says the change shows the university is more concerned with reputation than helping disadvantaged students. ''The university has given no basis for the change other than an apparent concern that these disadvantaged students are accessing … biomedicine at the expense of privileged students,'' said union education officer Mark Kettle.

Glad I didn't give them any money this year with a comment like that.
I really wish you could comment on that article every poorly written word just made me angry.

I think it is fair enough, 88 is very low, they would probably struggle once they hit uni.
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

Wow, I have that selection guarantee, so nothing is changing for this year right? It will change next year. I am a current year 12, will this affect me?
