According to the VCAA

"Students are permitted to bring into the examination room: pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers,
sharpeners, rulers and one scientific calculator."

Now its all well and good to put in a new battery, but there is such thing as a dud battery. I don't really want to take a spare battery and mini screw-driver into the exam and fiddle around for 5 minutes trying to replace a battery. Do you know how strict they are on this? be a real shame to have your calculator suddenly die in the exam.

Past students what did you end up doing?

I wasn't allowed to bring in a screw driver, but that is cos I asked the examiner if I could bring one in, I am fairly sure you could bring one if you didn't tell the examiner you had one, then feign ignorance if they try you for VCE heresy. I think he examiners also have calculators as backups, but i'm not sure.

You can take in a spare calculator, give it to the invigilator and have them put on the desk at the front of the room.

do you know of anyone who's done this? or have you?

the VCAA says the following regarding other allowable materials:

Chemistry Examinations 1 and 2
• Pencil (and eraser) to use on multiple-choice answer sheet.
One scientific calculator.
