Why can't we attach *.docx ? Surely there isn't a security breach by doing so...

Yeh, you have to convert to .doc first but you used to be able to upload .docx files. I think it's because some people don't have the newer version of word and they won't be able to open it..whereas if it was uploaded as a .doc file originally everyone can have access to it

Yeh it can be. Why can't everyone just get the new version of word. The layout is better looking than the old one

Not everyone can afford to buy it. I think in about 2 years time, the old version will be entirely obsolete and we'll allow the format, but until then I know a lot of people still use the old version of Word.

I used to use openoffice but when i last used it the interface just wasnt as good as microsoft office and it didnt seem as cohesive.

I think making this policy is actually a really good idea, im sure a bunch of members have tried to download the newer formats and have gone "Wtf" or they just haven't been able to make use of them.

There's a Microsoft office compatibility pack for older versions of office which is free on the Microsoft website. That way everyone can view '07 files :)
