1st years and Biology Prep

Unfortunately this is potentially not happening because I've been extremely sick recently and unsure whether I will recover by Thursday. I will post Wednesday evening about whether or not there will have to be a raincheck - it will still go ahead, but closer to semester start or even in the first week.

Apologies to everyone who was willing to come, I'll do my best to make up a another time and if you have any questions feel free to message me

Mostly an interest check thread. I know a lot of new biomedicine students have never studied biology before, since it's not a prerequisite for the course. I was in that situation and it flat out sucks, so I'm curious to find out exactly who's going into the course without it in 2011. The upside of this is that if there's enough interest, I'll run a session before uni starts to cover the basics and prepare people for the semester (I still have all my old notes/assessment/assignments from 1st year).

I'll be having a chat about this to my mate, who's co-running the BS society this year and see if we can maybe do it during semester.

So post here if you're in this situation and if you'd be interested in attending a session like this. It's open to people from any other course as well if they're taking bio for the first time.

^ This is an awesome idea. Is it worthwhile for me or do you cover topics I won't do this year?
Also, what topics are you going to go over in prep?

So were you in disadvantaged against many other kids who had taken biology?

My plan was to cover all of VCE biology and then do 1st semester because there's no need for 2nd semester to be taught. I certainly won't be covering topics that you won't do this year, there's no way I would have time to get to 2nd year biology (nor would I bother)

In terms of topics, major focus on cellular anatomy, respiration and biomolecules. Then a few bits and pieces from the other major areas of bio, genetics/immunology etc.

Like you wouldn't believe. It's basically just VCE bio with extra stuff on top, so if you've done it before it's mostly revision with bits of extension.

You said "running a session" does this mean it'll be just one day? How long for?
Count me in then! (as long as I'm here that day o-o & it doesn't clash with uni)

I'm pretty sure they ran extra tutes (once per week) for first year Biology students in BSc and maybe Biomed who didn't do VCE Biology. Nevertheless, I think this is a great idea.

They told us about this but there were only 3 / they didn't help me much (unless I went to the wrong ones).

Probably an afternoon, the week before semester starts. Depends on whether I get any interest though.

Any non-VCE biology student would be a fool to pass this up!

Golden opportunity! :)

Hmm, maybe change title to "Biology Prep for Biomed/Science" or something :O Maybe even VCE students could attend who want to go for interest..

Yeah true. I don't mind if VCE students attend but it'll be during their school so I don't think there'll be a lot

Hmm is it that much of a disadvantage to not have done biology before?
