Booklists are out on the portal.

Does anyone know the books listed for ETC1000? I enrolled only recently and books for that subject haven't appeared in my booklist.

I know that a lot of people say that you don't need to get all of the books..

What the deal with prescribed, recommended etc. books?

Is there no option with prescribed books?

generally youll need to use your prescribed textbook (u dont need to buy it but depends on the subject you might want to have it) just c wat the lecturer says
but the highly recommended or recommended you dont need to buy, if you really want to study using them borrow from the library

but usually the 1st years figure it out the hard way, they buy all the textbooks and then they figure out later they didnt really use it

haha I think I will probably just get the prescribed ones. I've found them online for a bit cheaper and my parents are paying, so I think I'll be getting those.

I disagree. In my experience (physics, chemistry, maths), I haven't needed to use the textbook at all. Lecture notes tend to suffice.
There's nothing to stop you from buying the textbook only when you realise you need it in week 6, and you can generally find library copies. Most lecturers/tutors have no problem photocopying pages out of textbooks either, you will find you can probably get away with not having a textbook.
Again, see what your lecturers say.

Ahhh dangit I should have taken the plunge and just bought my law textbooks weeks ago, now it's going to be nuts finding them on marketplace =[

Btw, if anyone can hook me up with last year's (or even this year's if it's available) reading guide for torts and crim, massive + karma! ALso +karma for last years LSS crim A and torts A notes!

To the OP, unless they have significantly changed the ETC1000 course, you do not need any textbooks for that course. They are extremely generous in the amount of lecture notes they provide in that subject (you get something like 200+ pages of notes).

From past experience, people doing MGC1010 and AFC1000 will need their textbooks. The textbook for introductory microeconomics is not strictly necessary but it does give a lot of helpful background info in case you struggle to understand some concepts.

For law people, for ILR you only need Laying Down the Law and the Interpretation of Legislation Act. For contract law, the principles book is essential. The casebook is for people who want HDs. I would also recommend looking at the butterworths questions and answers series. They're overpriced but one of the few books that can show you how to structure a good answer for specific law subjects. The only problem is they follow a different syllabus to Monash...

edit: ONE LAST THING! ALWAYS CHECK MONASH MARKETPLACE FOR YOUR BOOKS!! MONASH BOOKSHOP SHOULD BE THE ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT WHEN BUYING TEXTBOOKS!!!

Certain lecturers may have certain preferences. Wait til your first week. If the lecturer doesn't address it, and you don't feel comfortable putting your hand up during class, go and ask him/her after class - or send an email.
