Hey guys
I need to know the difference between mise en scene and visual composition and what each one is but i can't find any precise definitions or any that make sense

Mise en scene and visual composition are essentially the same thing. These terms can be used interchangeably.

They refer to everything within the frame of a shot. The placement of the characters and props, the lighting, the setting, the costuming. Mise en scene/Visual Composition is ALL visual though. You MUST NEVER refer to sound when you're talking about mise en scene/visual composition. It's everything you SEE, NOT hear. Mise en scene/Visual Composition also demonstrates the director's control over what is seen in the frame, i.e. the way the director has staged the scene for the camera.

hmm that's very odd. In all the textbooks + even VCAA assessor's reports it'll say "Mise en scene/visual composition". They're meant to be the same thing. Mise en scene refers to everything within the shot, while visual composition refers to how the shot has been constructed. So they're so similar they're basically the same thing although if you look at those two definitions above there is a marginal difference but most of the time these terms are used interchangeably.
